According to the “bio-psycho-social model”, attention deficit hyperactivity syndrome is caused by the interaction of physical, psychological and social factors. On the physical level, a disturbance in the metabolism of the neurotransmitter “dopamine” in the brain is mainly considered. There also seems to be a genetic predisposition as studies of siblings and twins have shown. Mental illness in parents, particularly personality disorders and alcohol dependence, also contribute to an increased risk of ADHD in children. A number of social factors appear to favor the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. These include difficulties within the family, low income, cramped living conditions, and cigarette or alcohol consumption by the mother during pregnancy. However, the disorder only occurs in the interplay of all these factors, which is why these factors are present more often than average in those affected, but do not necessarily have to be present for ADHD to develop.
The symptoms in children with ADHD according to the name of the syndrome:
1. concentration disorders:
Affected individuals are easily distracted while performing an activity or task and tend to be transient when completing activities such as homework. Forgetfulness and difficulty in structuring actions and the daily routine are also typical.
2.overactivity:
Often children with ADHD show an enormous urge to move combined with an inability to sit still, which has given rise to the term “fidget syndrome”. Affected children restlessly slide around on the chair or bob their legs and arms. In severe cases, sitting still is not possible at all and affected children constantly run around or climb up things.
3.impulse control disorder:
Individuals with ADHD tend to give in to impulses quickly and are unable to wait. Thus, they often interfere in conversations or activities of others and interrupt them. Unrestrained speaking “without periods” is also typical.
