The yellow fever vaccine is a live vaccine which is considered to be very safe and effective. After about 10 days, the vaccine protection is complete. In rare cases, flu-like symptoms may occur after vaccination. A lifelong immunization is assumed – only in exceptional cases, should there not have been a sufficient immune response – a booster vaccination may be necessary.
According to the WHO, yellow fever vaccination may only be administered to infants nine months of age or older. In people over 60 years of age, the health status must be checked first, as the risk of serious side effects increases. A risk-benefit assessment must also be performed in pregnant women.
