In fact, the causes of irritable bowel syndrome have been little researched to date and the diagnosis is therefore usually made by exclusion. It is currently assumed that there is no such thing as a typical irritable bowel disease and that irritable bowel syndrome can be caused by various factors.
What is striking, however, is that stress apparently plays a major role in many of those affected. Irritable bowel syndrome occurs especially during acute stress, but also in the course of nervousness, anxiety and mental illness. This is because the central nervous system is connected to the intestinal nervous system via the gut-brain axis, so they react to each other.
Irritable bowel syndrome can also be caused by small intestinal malabsorption, in which bacteria from the large intestine enter the small intestine, years of malnutrition or food intolerances. The changes in the intestine also occur in other intestinal diseases, making both causation and diagnosis difficult.
Typical symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include cramping, burning or stabbing pain in the lower abdomen alternating with overwhelming diarrhea (i.e., sudden and barely restrained urge to defecate) and constipation. Frequent flatulence and loud bowel sounds also indicate irritable bowel syndrome. At night, most irritable bowel patients are symptom-free. In addition, discomfort such as heartburn and nausea may also occur.
