Effective vaccines are available for five types of the twelve different serogroups of meningococci. These are the subgroups most commonly responsible for developing meningitis.
There are basically two types of vaccines. A conjugate vaccine is used for meningitis vaccination in children under two years of age, which offers long-lasting vaccination protection. Older people are usually vaccinated with a polysaccharide vaccine. With both active ingredients, only a few relatively harmless side effects are to be expected.
