The dengue fever vaccine was developed to immunise the body against the four different serotypes of dengue virus. The vaccine contains attenuated, killed or recombinant virus particles that induce an immune response and make the body, to produce antibodies against the dengue virus. As with most vaccinations, side effects may occur with the dengue vaccine, including temporary redness or swelling at the injection site, tiredness or headache. However, severe side effects are rare.
To reduce the risk of dengue fever, other preventative measures should also be taken, such as wearing long-sleeved clothing, using mosquito nets and insect repellent.

The dengue fever vaccination not only protects against infection but also against a severe course of the disease with possible hospitalisation. Any side effects of the vaccination are usually considered harmless. Some of those vaccinated may experience slight pain at the injection site or short-term headaches and muscle aches.
